A nearly indescribably display of melodic hard rock, “Houses of the Holy” supports the heavy premise of Physical Graffiti yet manages to be friendly at the same time, perhaps the warmest song on the album. This one came fully formed from the sessions for the album of the same name, not even requiring a remix, given its recording in May 1972 at Olympic with George Chkiantz, and the subsequent mix by Eddie Kramer at Electric Ladyland in New York City while the band were playing summer dates in the United States. One still hears Bonham’s famed squeaky bass drum pedal throughout, which is more of a talking point than a distraction.
